Experience the extraordinary expressiveness of old-vine Malbec through Achaval Ferrer single-vineyard Fincas.
Three distinct terroirs at three different altitudes create a fascinating range of styles: The classic power of Finca Mirador, the perfumed elegance of Finca Bella Vista, and the complex minerality of Finca Altamira. Join us for the unveiling of the Fincas’ 2020 vintage.
Finca Bella Vista: planted in 1910, located at Perdriel (Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza) at 990m (3,250ft) above sea level. Soil characteristics: alluvial origin, clay topsoil, bed of eroded rocks.
The intimate connection of the Finca to the Mendoza River allows the Malbec from this finca to shine for its harmony. It finds a typically elegant expression, typical of the region, where the terroir of Luján de Cuyo demonstrates itself stylish and faithful to its terroir.
Finca Mirador: planted in 1921, located at Medrano (Junin, Mendoza) at 700m (2,300ft) above sea level. Soil characteristics: deep sandy soil; West-to-east furrow irrigation.
Located in the east of Mendoza, Finca Mirador stands out for its sandy soil. This almost desert-like growing environment sculpts the flavour profile of the wines. The additional strain and effort to grow results in a slow ripening and a luscious, indulgent wine that fills the palate.
Finca Altamira: planted in 1950, located at Altamira (Uco Valley, Mendoza) at 1,100m (3,610ft) above sea level. Soil characteristics: alluvial origin; shallow (30 cm [12 inches]) surface of limestone combined with volcanic ashes with layers of eroded rocks (boulders) rich in volcanic sediments.
Like the mountain range, so close to our vineyard, the Malbec from Finca Altamira imposes itself on the palate and through its long finish—it is a wine faithful to its terroir. The soil’s volcanic rocks transmit that energy onto the wine, becoming palpable: it is a wine that describes its origin.
Gustavo Rearte, Achaval Ferrer winemaker, sees himself as a terroir interpreter, a custodian of a new collection of specimens that continue the story started over 100 years ago; wines he crafts under the philosophy of minimal intervention and respect for terroir.
Achaval-Ferrer has one single passion: to craft world class terroir-driven iconic wines from Argentina. Achaval Ferrer produces the most critically acclaimed Malbecs from Mendoza by international critics, sourced from single vineyards with low-yielding, old ungrafted vines.
